silage management

Silage is produced when forages are stored in the absence of oxygen. During this anaerobic fermentation process the pH level is decreased, resulting in stable and high quality forage.

The 4 stages of silage management

Cutting
In the first stage it is important to cut the crop at the right stage, when the appropriate dry matter level and optimal amounts of fiber sources such as ADF and NDF have been reached.
  • Spread the swath wide for maximum dry-down effect.
  • Make sure that soil particles do not reduce the quality of the silage.
Picture
Ensiling
Points of attention in this stage:
  • Inspect the bunker for moulds.
  • Place the sidewall plastic over the walls.
  • Feedout speed determines the bunker size:
    Winter 5ft/week
    Summer 7ft/week.
  • Never stop packing during ensiling.
  • Use silage inoculants for extra protection and assurance.
  • The filled bunker should be a half circle.
  • Spread silage in thin layers. From back to front, which can be provided by longer slopes.
Covering the Silage
Picture
Covering and storing the silage can be done in 6 steps:
a. Cooldown® (top-layer treatment)
b. MegaBarrier®/TopSeal
c. Sidewall Plastic
d. Plastic Sheeting
e. Meganyl®
f. EasyLock®/Sandbags/Anchorbags
Feed-out
Covering and storing the silage.

Silage management product

Cooldown®
Cooldown® is a mix of acids including benzoic acid that controls unwanted bacteria, mould and yeast. Cooldown® is easy to use and non-corrosive. The combination of user friendliness and a powerful mould inhibitor makes it ideally suited for use in mixed rations. In addition, it can also be used as a top-layer treatment in grass, alfafa and corn silage.

  • Inhibits heating in your TMR
  • Prevents mould growth in silage
  • Reduced risk of mycotoxins
  • Increases dry matter intake
  • Increases milk production per cow
  • Reduces feed waste

specifications

Packaging: 23 l/2.05 l liquid
TMR, dosage: 0,5-1 l/tonne
Silage dosage: 0,5-1 l/tonne
Top-layer treatment: 0,25 l/m2-0,0251/ft2
Megabarrier®/Topseal
TopSeal or MegaBarrier® can be placed directly on the silage. The top surface of the bunker is the most difficult to keep packed; However, using these products will ensure the best fermentation.

  • Follows the shape of the silage.
  • Reduces the amount of oxygen in the top layer.
  • Reduces heating and mould growth.
  • Keeps silage cool during feed-out.
  • Tougher puncture and tear resistance.
  • High oxygen barrier, fast fermentation, reduced dry matter loss, and 20x less oxygen permeability.

specifications

MegaBarrier®
Thickness: 2.0mil
Dart drop (ASTM D1709): 300g
Tensile at break (ASTM D882): MD 40MPa, TD 35MPa
Elongation at break (ASTM D882): MD 400%, TD 350%
Oxygen Transmission Rate (ASTM D3985): 185cm3/m2/day
TopSeal

Elongation at break (ASTM D882): MD 350%, TD 370%
Oxygen Transmission Rate (ASTM D3985): 5500cm3/m2/day
Sidewall plastic
Sidewall plastic is placed along the bunker wall and over the TopSeal/MegaBarrier®.
  • Keeps rain and melted snow out.
  • Protects the concrete wall from acid influences.
The silage clamp holds the sidewall film tight against the walls while filling bunker silos.

advantages

  • Long life with resilient stainless steel material.
  • Suitable for walls with a thickness of 6-10inches.
  • Holds plastic firmly in place against the wall.
  • Safer than using sandbags.
  • Prevents sidewall film from blowing away.
  • Hang the sidewall film when it suits you.
  • Thin and smooth, making it easier to pull out when the bunker is filled.
  • Useful during feed-out to hold plastic in place.
Available in 5, 8 and 10 inch widths for various wall thickness. ADVICE Position the clamps around 7-10 feet apart.
PLASTIC SHEETING

Megaplastpower®

This triple layer agricultural sheeting is produced using state of the art extrusion technology. The machine contains internal cooling which cools down the sheeting faster, resulting in folds that remain strong, with 'metallocene' as the basic raw material.
MegaplastPower® has achieved the toughness and durability that you may expect from a top product. A triple layer plastic sheeting with excellent characteristics that easily outperforms traditional agricultural plastics every time.

easylock®

sandbags/anchorbags

A unique strap developed for bunker silos.
Holds the plastic tight against the silage.
Very strong and easy to use.
Can be set in place quickly.
Very effective in high wind.
Can be delivered in any length.
Use EasyLock® in combination with MegaBarrier® for best results.
Can be tightened as silage settles.
Anchorbags are available empty or filled with peastone. They are an important tool in proper silage management. First place them on the edge between the silage and the wall. They will fill the gap and tighten the plastic (TopSeal and MegaplastPower®) to ensure an effective cover. Sandbags can be used on the top of the wall to fasten the plastic.
